Most police departments do not allow their working dogs to breed. This is also true of many other organizations that use working dogs. The breeding stock for these working dogs is Schutzhund dogs. Without Schutzhund, the working ability of GSDs and other working breeds would quickly deteriorate and it would be difficult to find suitable dogs for police work, bomb detection, or search and rescue. People do Schutzhund for fun, but they also know that they are giving back to society by developing the next generation of working dogs. Do they neuter them or leave them intact? Curt
There has been a HUGE shift away from SchH dogs for use w/PDs.
The majority of dogs that come from any formal venue are KNPV dogs.
There are several reasons why SchH dogs are not favored.

Mark What is KNPV? And another question I'm embarrassed to ask, what is PSA? I tried a link but it was broken. [glow=red,2,300]Mel[/glow]

Mark Mark, you cetainly have more experience/knowlege than I with this subject... In the two Schutzhund Clubs that I've been associated with, I know of three Schutzhund GS that were sold/placed in a Police Department. I train in FL with a K9 officer who works his dog in Schutzhund, but mostly he's the helper. Haven't seeen his dog work as he always has to come after his shift. [glow=red,2,300]Mel[/glow]
