My puppy Bravo left yesterday to be started by Butch Henderson (of Doberman and Bouvier fame). Butch didn't say so, but I think Bravo is also going to be assessed to see if he has the basic necessary qualities to be a competitive Schutzhund dog. Butch has worked with my Doberman, and I have a lot of confidence in him, although he wasn't too excited about the potential in an Airedale. Butch is competitive on an international level, so I don't know if his attitude toward Airedales is biased from his competitive experience or something else. But, I know he will start my boy right.

Bravo is Seneca Exceptional at Lauregen (CH Seneca Brave to the Max-- he is sired by a SchHIII German dog x CH Seneca Whodunit's Opportunity ). Bravo is seven-month old. I've been working on obedience training and service training with him, because that's all I know how to do with him. That's why Butch needed to step in now, to start Bravo the right way for Schutzhund.
No pictures because I've been afraid to buy a digital camera, I don't know what's easy and good.

Laura Did he give you any hints why he wasn't too excited about an Airedale? I saw him lat May during nationals - his Dobe was very good! He won the Nationals. Alex.

No, he wasn't specific at all. Butch never talks down other dogs. He just wasn't enthusiastic or positive at all when I told him I was getting Airedale. He said there weren't many in Schutzhund, and that I would have more luck with another breed. He just couldn't understand why I wanted an Airedale. So, this could be because of lack of familiarity or because he just hasn't seen too many Airedales in top competition, which is really what it's all about him. I can understand that, he's a top competitor and he really wants to look at dogs that are top competition dogs.
For me, it's more about seeing how far my own dog can go. Maybe it's a top competitor, and maybe it's not. Either way, it's my dog and I love it. The fun for me is in trying to make my dog "be all it can be."
What I really like about Butch is that he doesn't push too hard or too early with the dogs despite the fact that he is into top competition. He lets puppies develop without pushing them.
He worked magic with my Doberman. She loved the training. She is very soft compared to Bravo. Bravo is confident and steady for a puppy, so I'm hoping that Butch is surprised at what an Airedale may be able to do.

Laura, Do you just train together with Butch or he keeps your pup for awhile and trains him? By the way, last year FCI world championship in Holland had 1 Airedale and none Dobes . Alex.

Laura,
Why don't you want to try and do the training with Bravo? I think you would get alot of enjoyment training your own dog.

My plan is to have Butch start Bravo. Unfortunately, I am totally unable to meet at the club’s training times. Therefore, when I meet with Butch it is for a private lesson. Butch doesn't have the time, and I don't have the money to do this a lot. But, once Butch starts Bravo and gives me a direction, I will take it from there, combined with private lessons. This is really important to me because I plan on moving from the area soon. Then, there will be no chance of training with Butch. I want to capitalize on his availability now.

Thanks. I think your pup's sire Max is half brother to my dog.

Marcia, you have already done it all with Ferris. You KNOW that an Airedale can do it. What qualities you think Ferris has been made him so successful? Thanks, Laura
