;D Hello all! Good news from Southern Cal! Dino and Jinjar passed their Therapy Dog Evaluation and now are 'official' therapy dogs! In order to pass, they must be evaluated by a professional dog trainer and display obedience/control skills including sit/stay/heel/2 min. down, including loose heel in crowded areas with many distractions; show calm disposition around loud objects (dropping pans, etc.); tolerant disposition (mouth handling/ body handling, etc.); and friendly, calm disposition in general. They also need to have to perform 10 hours of supervised visits at a facility(classroom/hospital, etc.). Now that they have done this, the The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy will cover Dino and Jinjar by the group’s insurance plan during our visits or other therapy pet work. They will also be issued a special vest and I.D. tag to wear. Just thought I'd share the good news from the Airedale duo in Southern Cal! Take care, Katy (Click on picture to see larger image.)

Great news for th airedale and the lucky folks who get to enjoy the company of these dogs. Many older folks who remember the days when 'everyone' had an airedale particularly enjoy visits.
Can you comment on the dogs ages and the training you did to get them to this level? Any challenges? or was it pretty easy? How about the personalities of each dog - obviously they are steady in any situation with people, children and other creatures - what sets them apart from each other?
What are their plans for active therapy work? children?, seniors?, medical facilities??

Congrats on the sound Airedales. Another example of versatility in the breed and in this case from tightly bred "Hog Dog" lineage.

Thanks all for all your congrats and support! As far as what's in store for them, more of what they've been doing, "unofficially" since they were 3 mos. old...focusing on English Language development with kids. I have dubbed it "Pet Assisted English Language Development". We go into elementary classrooms with students from foreign countries. Those kids are often reticent to talk, but put a walking teddy bear in front of them...give them some vocab and watch out! Instant motivation! Once they have some experience, they read books to them, write about them, create computer PowerPoints about them. One junior high classroom of newcomers did a big compare/contrast project-how they changed over time...after clipping, etc. Here are a couple links if you are interested in seeing them more "in action": pjh.fuesd.k12.ca.us/pet_assisted_eld.htmAnother focus and interest of my use of the pups is in emotional/behavioral fields. Petting an Airedale can balance and soothe even the most angry child...as well as teach love and empathy. Here's a website on that: pjh.fuesd.k12.ca.us/global.htmNow they are certified, during summertime I can now take them into the hospital and convelesent hospital!

Dino and Jinjar are about 16 mo old. Dino is a Geronimo/Bailey pup and Jinjar is a Titan/Indian Maid pup. As for the breeding. Geronimo and Indian Maid are b/s off of Hunter/Bailey. Titan is Hunters 1/2 brother off of Winchester. Higgins is Bailey's sire. As a side note, Dave S in Washington has Dusty, who is also a State Certified Therapy dog I believe. Dusty is a Hunter/Star Dancer dog. Star Dancer is Titans sister. Here is a picture of Dino,Jinjar, and Dusty's sires. Kind of hard to see them because they are at work. ;D

Congrats Katy. You are doing a great job. Keep us posted.
Joe, breeding is about consistency as I have said many times. I really believe that is what it is about. .....as long as it is consistently good. ;D ;D

Well now I really don't know what to say. I just found out that the Moore's dog, sister to Jinjar, is a state certified therapy dog also. I am not sure this is good for the rep of breeder of hog dogs. LOL What I really want to know is why Maggie never posted it? I would think she would want to show off a bit. Personally, I think they are doing well at this because of the lack of handling the first 4 weeks. Sorry I mentioned it, but like I said, kissyfacing only benefits the unconfident dogs. Natural confidence is everything. Making all dogs to appear confident by kissyfacing does no working dog a good turn.

...maybe she'd post if there was a "Therapy Dog" section on the board.... And...just so you don't worry about Dino becoming too kissyfaced, Don ;D (Click on picture to see larger image.)

This thread on therapy dogs, the picture Kate put up in the previous post, and the picture I put up of these dogs sires tells everyone what? It tells us how strong the roll of the environment is. Change the environmental factors, any one of these dogs could be catching hogs or visa versa. The gentics only determines what the dog can be, the environment determines what it will be as long as they are sound.
