Do SLIGHT variations in bite matter? I know most standards call for a scissors or level bite, but would a slight under or overshot bite affect a dogs ability to work?
I have seen farm terriers kill rats- with scissors and undershot bites: seems its not just the teeth that kill, its the pressure behind the teeth that do the job.
For working dog folks and bite sport folks, do dogs with SLIGHT under or overshot bites fail to work as effectively as a scissors or 'correct' dentitioned dog?

In my opinion, a slight under bite or over bite will not affect the working ability of a dog. Given my druthers, I would rather have a dog with a very slight under bite as any over bite at all...that is just me.
Bites in dogs are funny things to call. My bitch that I bred a few weeks ago has level bite. The son that I bred her to has a very modest (hardly noticable) under bite.
Every pup in this litter has a perfect sissors bite...so go figure.
I know where the under bite came from, and hoped this breeding would correct it.
I would have been disappointed if there had been any overbites but I would have been OK with modest undershot pups for the work these dogs do....but just for my personal gratification..I am pleased that this inbred litter produced what is considered the most desirable bites.

I have a friend that uses a particular sire that is undershot - he is an outstanding dog but for that bite, and the hunting drive is awesome so he refuses to NOT use him - and the dog does not produce that bite. And, another dog with a scissors bite throws it in his pups - 1 out of 4. Go figure!

An old houndsman told me once that he likes a slightly undershot jaw because the only thing it really does is slightly increase the leverage the dog has. I have seen dogs that had a to a 1/2 in underbite at 5 months turn out to have a perfect bite at 1 year. I would have to imagine that phenomenon can work both ways.

Yes Don...that can and does work both ways. I have seen bites 'float'.
Many "show potential" puppies have been bought at 8 to 12 weeks of age, only to be flung into the breeder's face with demand for refund by age 6 months. lolol
That is what you deal with in conformation showing.(and not the worst of it).
It is no secret that I did a lot of conformation handling in my younger years, both for my personal dogs and as a pro. But I never lost my grounding in the hunting aspects that I was born to.
Yes, I suppose I prostituted myself at the AKC, FCI and ARBA sponsored shows...but hell, we all have ot make a living.
If my back would put up with it, I would do it again. I made a LOT of money for my slippery services, not to mention the ear-cropping business ,lololol
We all do what we have to do to make our retirements comfortable. And sometimes....just for kicks ang giggles.
