Thought I would post this pic of my airedale 'Pretzel' getting a little training time. He is nearly 8 months old and really fun to have around. I am following the book Walk with Wick to train my dog and this was his first coon visit. He has slayed several possums and a muskrat on his own. I live in a rural area in southern Indiana and all the training areas I could want in my backyard. Pretzel is swimming very good and makes 20-30 yard swimming retrieves in my slough/canal. Randy

I let him work the cage but only for a short time. I later released the coon out of sight for my dog and brought him back to make the track which he did. He treed the coon but did not bark at him. It was dark when he treed and he had calmed down since working the cage. He was standing on the tree looking real hard for the coon. I am done with coons for a few more months. Right now we are working on basic ob. Randy

Randy good to see your pic and post. Ran into it on Lever gun board last night and cross posted here. See General "Airedale pup"
Where did you get the pup?

I bought my pup from the McCallisters in Tell City,Indiana which is about an hour east of me. Their dogs came from the Kentucky/Tenn border area. Randy

Curt, I have trained three Chesapeake Bay Ret for goose and duck hunting in my life. I have been around coon dogs but never owned one. My buddy who I fox hunt with is a coon hunter. I spoke to him about a book to train by and he suggested 'Walk with Wick'. He did not have it so I posted up somewhere on the 'net about it and it came highly suggested so I bought it from Wick. I am a big reader and found the book very informative and would suggest it to all. It is written as one who would write a book as you were saying the words. There are volume 1 and 2. Wick shipped the book and I had it in a couple of days. Its mainly on coon hounds but you can use the theories or ideas of Wick for all critters. I believe it was shipped out of Missouri. Randy

I'd worry about him busting off a tooth on that wire cage. Looks like his prey drive is alive and well. Nice picture.

His prey drive is very strong. All I have to do is let the chickens out when he is loose and he catches them real easy. Its funny to watch him when I have a old rooster that will not coop up with the other chickens. All I do is let P out and hold the coop door open and the rooster makes one lap and in the coop he goes. I have to be real quick though. P will be close on his tail and will try to run into the coop himself. I love my chickens too so I try to keep P busy or kenneled when the birds are out. He has become quite the possum slayer too.
