Hi All -
I have looked around for a coupe of hours but only found one discussion (workingairedale.proboards78.com/index.cgi?board=fur1&action=display&thread=1147406451). I am getting the following points on the coyote hunting from this thread:
1. It is better to lure the coyote to you by using a dog as a "bait".
2. Smaller dogs are less intimidating for a coyote when using the dog as "bait".
3. Make sure dogs come to you when you recall them.
Ok, my goal is to go and help a local bird hunting club with thousands of acres to catch coyotes that pick up destroy birds after the shooting time is over. I may just get a free run of the entire property. My ultimate goal would be to find a track, follow it to the den or to the coyote and either have dogs kill him or me finish with a shotgun or a hand gun, near point-blank. rifles are not allowed there by regulations, as one of the boundaries of the club is against a set of track homes.
As I was writing in my post on a different threads, I have 4 dogs that hunt hard, and 2 that have confirmed kills of things of good size. Not counting flushing, treeing, etc. Two of my dogs are heavier 72 and 90. And the other two 62 and 65, but they run fast and for longest time like hounds (exaggeration). The heavier/bigger ones are better trackers.
I would really appreciate if anyone with experience could hep me with tactics and strategies of the hunt with the resources I have. I will also have a buddy with a shotgun (he is the better shot), an ATV w/optional off-road trailer, so I can have a two-dog kennel on it. and a 4x4 Toyota truck that can handle about anything, but I will not be able to run it through the fields.
Is this a good idea to let the tracker dog run in front of the slowly moving ATV and when he hits, let the other two, faster ones out from the back of the 2-wheel off-road short trailer? Once dogs catch/up with coyote, drive up on ATV and finish the job?
Is this completely crazy or is there a better way? I really want to know "myself and the enemy", according to the "Art of War"...
Thanks in advance!
