This is virgin territory for me. Would you start them at 2 mos? 3 mo? 4 mo? 5 mo.? To have them ready to run the Jr and possibly the Sr fur test. Is it going to be do-able....as in getting a 5 mo old to run a 200 yd track in unfamiliar territory? I think it is. What worries me the most is probably all the dogs and distractions the pups won't be used to. Any thoughts?

What worries me the most is probably all the dogs and distractions the pups won't be used to. Any thoughts? My suggestion is start them early and keep it short. If they start to lose interest, pick them up. A pair of them running a cheese track will probably put a bit more incentive in the game. Continue as you did before, increasing distance and difficulty. Once they are where you want them, try a park or other place with a just a few people about. Walk the pup around on leash first, allowing it to investigate all the new smells and stuff. Might need some time, the first time out for the pup to calm down where it is not completely distracted. Then start with an easy trail, and increase distance and difficulty once again, depending on the pup's progress. When you can get the pup trailing through a fairly busy park with kids running around, that pup will follow a trail anywhere within his abilities. Caged coons are of course out for public parks, and loose dogs might be a problem with your cheese trail! Betty and other friends could be a big help in creating initial distractions. Pete

Don. What I have done in the past is what I am gonna do in the future.... I start a dog just as soon as it shows a connection with me. usally a day or 2 after I pick them up... start them trailing the infamous and Most dangerous hotdog to get them using their noses for more than sniffing each other. and progress them Up since the drag is what they will be chasing in Ohio then thats what ill mix into it. when they continually work the drag ill introduce the coon to the Picture. the key is to get them wanting the coon bad enough distractions wont bother them. can this be done in time for OHIO I have no clue but im gonna give it a try. I think my biggest goal will be finding a place with Alot of water that isnt frozen hmmmmmm.
