Just pushing your buttons Dave. Did you read my intentions for the training forums here? The training forums, to me anyway, are a crucial part of the resurrection of the airedale as a viable working dog. You, belonging to retriever clubs, along with other such as Ron, who also belongs to retriever clubs, could be a valuable asset to this forum in assisting beginners with problems they are encountering. What do you think?

Yea Don, I think this training category is good. However, I would be reluctant to try to teach a person how to apply the "force fetch", for example, using this format. In that instance they would be better served, if they bought one of any number of good videos on the market.
Happy Thanksgiving.

That is the advise to give then with the recommendation on which video is best. I think it will work out. Possibly after someone has the video, the details can be discussed further here.

Now I like a good "fish" tale as much as the next guy, so I'll tell this one, but don't worry-I know it doesn't mean anything, he's not that smart, but...
Today I had both dogs at the preserve, working a pretty wide open land area, with good sight lines. It was a big shoot, and together they picked up forty birds on the morning (and later 35 ducks in the afternoon, but that's not part of the story). 'Duff does 70 percent of the work, he marks better, and kills cripples faster. When the feathers are flying, he keeps busy.
Holly is less polished, so I keep them lefty-righty and use her presence (he's got no collar or leash) to steady him. I'll hold her on a tab, watch a fall, send her and make him honor. If we're lucky, while she's fetching, he gets another bird. He also flushed a few that didn't fly and got some guys some sweet shots. One of the effects is that he get's a little jealous and hasty. So I keep him honest. Good morning, that's the set up, here's the story.
Coming in for lunch, near the cars we found an escaped rooster pheasant. I'd like to say it was a cripple, and we were real humanitarians, but it wasn't hit at all, it was hiding under the car. I sent 'Duff for it and a lengthy quest ensued. Meanwhile, I put Holly up in the car, gave her water and chilled her out.
I went to find 'Duff and saw him a ways away with the rooster in his chops. Good dog! I tooted tooted him here, and he came a runnin'. I took the rooster, but it spurred me, and I let it go, bad Dave! I released 'Duff again and her took off. When he finally got him back he wouldn't come in. I toot tooted and he gave me the paw and split.
I followed. He went all the way back to his morning station and was getting a drink from the water pail after all that hard running. Head down in the pail next to him was the drowned rooster. I toot tooted him (I was pissed 'cause he was so self-employed). He picked the dead rooster up, dropped it with the other birds and ran over and head butted me in the crotch.
I put the ecollar on for after lunch. I know he couldn't have decided to drown the rooster. I know he was bugged at working a team, at least before he got real tired, but it makes a cool story.

Duff sounds like one of those dogs with legendary intelligence! Any other examples, or was this just a red herring?
