Just curious. I know Airedales can retrieve objects not only from the surface of the water, but also from under it (up to the head-dive depth at least) – is that pretty common and should be expected of all retrieving dogs?

It is my understanding that reliable retrieves on the surface or under the surface is a trained condition for Airedales and retrievers alike. It is just usually easier to do with a retriever.

It's no harder for a dale to do than any other breed. It's not a retriever specialty from what I've seen.
My Old English Sheepdog would do it, and it is required for the Newfoundland Water rescue Dog test.
Any dog with the drive and basic foundation should have no problem with it.
We have trained a pit to dive to the bottom of a 3ft pool to retrieve rings as well. My dobe and dale both will dive to varying depths to retrieve things.
