I saw the forced fetch thread and was wondering if airedales can be generalized as natural retrievers. While we're on the topic if a forced retrieve is necessary, are they quick to forgive conflict? I know that sometimes it is hard to generalize behavioral characteristics, but if you had to?? thanks in advance

I have found airedales instinctive retrievers who are possessive. Some are reluctant to forgive conflict, but they must understand the rules very clearly on force fetch. I believe that forced retrieves are exxential for reliability.

My girl liked to retrieve since she was a puppy but was loosing interest on the way back dropping the object in 90% cases. She didnt like forced fetch training at all, was much stressed during those sessions and I thought that she would never retrieve anything... But today - doesnt matter what I throw and where - she gets it, brings it back, and holds it in her mouth, and does it always enthusiastically. I even have a funny story to share about one of our retrieve training sessions in the back yard. Along the house I have concrete path and right next to it dirt (both strips around 3 yards wide and about 20 yards long). It was around 9pm, so I had the lights on around the back yard but its still was dark. Tiara is in the ready position and I throw dumbbell - it hits concrete and rolls into the dirt. She runs, bends over to get it (and she was thought not to sniff and/or chew on it - and she hasnt done either one for a year or so), sniffs the dumbbell (I'm shocked at that moment), tries to pick it up awkwardly, drops it, and looks at me with tail down. I'm quietly looking at her not saying a word and not moving, after a second of hesitation she picks up the dumbbell, brings it to me, touches me with that dumbbell (she does it about 50% of the time), I take the dumbbell from her mouth and finally realize - dumbbell is covered with poop (that dirt strip is a usual spot for that but I always clean it up, except that night) At that moment Tiaras mouth and beard, my hand, leg, and shorts are also covered with crap... But she did the retrieve! I guess it was an ultimate proofing
