Help, I need to do some quick studying! I have joined a club and began training. In the last 3 weeks I have realized how detailed, preicise and complex this sport is and my mind is blown. I need some recommendations on books or videos so that I can become a quick study of the different methods of training. I want to be able to converse inteligently with my TD about my options - both short term and long term.
First dog - 8months old, mixed breed
first club
Currently working on fundamental obedience training
Goal - sport dog, BH, dog that judges like
Training up until now has been informal. We've been keeping it light with lots of play. I realize that I may have missed out on critical training periods by not undertaking a structured program. I have been trying to promote prey drive but had no formal instruction on it.
I now feel that I am starting at the beginning of Schz training I'm now training for quick response and consistency. Sit, platz, attention with play breaks.
Some concepts I need instruction on are:
Options for early Bark and hold training? Should I be training for a focused prey driven tug obsession with a bite when she starts to bark?
When does that helper get introduced? At this age? later on? pros and cons of early and late?
Hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction of books or videos that can broaden my overal knowledge of the sport and its training techniques.
Curt - the gang at club all say HI! and hope that all is well with you and the dogs. We all look forward to seeing you at the upcoming trials and seminars!
