We went to the club and worked protection and obedience yesterday.
Obedience: Mijo shuts down and acts like a “mule” when we give him negative corrections so we started clicker training. We trained him to pick up a dumbbell but I was too slow on the click and he throws it around. I will work on my timing and train him to bring the dumbbell to me. I am also going to incorporate the clicker into some of our other training. The trainer also thinks he needs to lose a few pounds. I guess he has something in common with his owners!
Protection: Mijo started barking and worked himself up the minute the helper pulled into the parking lot. He made such a racket I went to check on him. I thought he had to go to the bathroom, took him out of the Pathfinder and he tried to drag me out onto the field. Needless to say, he went back into the SUV and had to wait. The helper said Mijo was like a “gangly teenager.” He grew so fast all his body parts aren’t working together. He said it was all young dog stuff and to keep working with him.
Club: They still think he is too cute to work protection……...several people have mentioned to us it would really help to see another Airedale work protection, but no one knows of one close to us. Some of the members travel to Germany and have seen Airedales work at some of the events and they keep encouraging us. Most of the club members have commented one time or another that he just thinks and acts differently then a GSD pup, but they all want to see what he can do as he matures.
Newbies: Fernando & I are still so new to the sport that anything Mijo accomplishes is a success in our eyes......
