We came home from protection at 11:15 PM last night and Mijo was tired. He inhaled his food and went to sleep…….
Protection – According to the Helper, “Mijo has what it takes but he is still young in the head.” He has a big bark; loves to show his pearly whites and people think he has an alligator grin. His bite has continued to improve, he is biting fuller but still continues to adjust his bite, shake the sleeve and try and run with his head down. The last 2x’s we went to protection, the Helper started putting a leash on his sleeve. When Mijo bites the sleeve and takes it, the Helper keeps tension on the leash and runs w/Mijo & Fernando. This keeps Mijo’s head up and stops him from shaking the sleeve. The Helper will also let the leash go slack and then put tension on it, if Mijo adjust his bite the Helper yanks the leash and he loses the sleeve. Last night he only lost the sleeve the first time after that he didn’t adjust his bite and was in his glory running with the sleeve several times. We go to protection 1-2x’s per week and people in the club are still very interested to see what Mijo will do as he matures. I just keep thinking the Helper, Joel thinks he “has what it takes” Hopefully Fernando & I won’t screw him up since we are learning as we go along………..I sure wish there was someone who worked an Airedale that lived close to us.
Tracking – Mijo constantly has his nose to the ground and tracking isn’t a problem for him. Now the articles are another story. We just started introducing him to the articles and he thinks they are a toy to throw up in the air and play with.
Obedience – This continues to be our biggest challenge. We work on it daily but Mijo is about 15 months old and acting like a male teenager. The next few months will be a challenge but he has moments of greatness. When he fuses and is actually working, he prances. People turn their heads and tell me later, when we can get him to do that on & off the leash thru the entire routine, it will be something special. The big question in my mind is WHEN will be able to trust him off leash. His recall still needs work but his long downs are improving, almost 10 minutes regularly.
I tried to take some pictures last night but they didn’t come out, operator error; I will try again soon. All and all we are pleased with his progress and we just keep on trying
