Hi Curt- I got your email about protection drive. I can see wanting to start a new pup. As great as Gator is in my (limited) opinion it seems to be something that the dog has or not. If they have it a bit then you can really promote that drive.
Your question about Xander and protection drive. He definitely has it. I was reading the last thread from Randy(?) about his dog not being everyones buddy etc.
Xander is like that. He can be really aloof. He is good when we are in social situations but in his house or car nobody would break into our house or my car especially if I'm in it.
He LOVES to bite the sleeve and he loves to keep it afterward. That said- 'aus' will be an issue for him. All the training has been done through his drives. No electricity and little force. the only thing that I have had to use some real force for is 'aus'. Once he has won something he doesn't like to give it up. ....
I think the Airedales have so much potential. He does work and learn differently than the GSD's. The Terriers are great problem solvers and I find that he picks things up fast. Lots of repetition bores him so we don't do the endless repetirion that some of the GSD's that I have seen training. Short, interesting and high drive is what works for Xander when we work on things.
That said I would love to hear from people about tracking. Xander loves it, sticks with it and adapts well but he is fast and breaks into trailing(which is what they are bred to do I guess). This loses us some points on the Schutzhund TR trial... they seem to look for the slow , very precise tracking dog. Any ideas?
Anyway, It's nice just to see the Airedales out there working!
Funny when we are downtown or somewhere with Xander all the old timers recognize an Airedale and have a story about hunting or the farm etc. They were definitely well thought of at one time.
