Last night ‘Cona did a 45min aged track across and through neighboring yards – I made a bunch of turns and corners – even dropped into a ditch and out the other side. We have an inch of cold dry snow in some places – lawn in others. I have no doubt with that with the cold temps (around freezing) that human scent lingers much longer – so although she had no problems, I don’t think it was at all difficult for her.
She would not score high in a Sch tracking trial as she casts back and forth across the track considerably – 2-3 feet to either side of the track. She switches between tracking (dead on the footprints) and trailing (casting back and forth along the track) – but her nose is always glued to the ground – no “air scenting” of the track. Some corners she cuts across 4-5 feet before the corner – others she runs past by 5 feet but always realizes her mistake and comes back to the corner and finds the track without any trouble. I’m shooting for the TD test (AKC/CKC) for her, so style and technique are of a much less concern for me. Article indication will start very soon.
Questions - Currently my wife and I are laying tracks. We have been aging the tracks a minimum of 30min for a couple of weeks - hoping that there is much less human odor than track scent.
We are also planning to start article indication very soon. Again, for practicle purposes we are going use our own personal articles.
Will 'Cona have a problems tracking stranger tracks and indicating stranger articles when we get to that point? Or with a solid foundation will she bridge that gap between familiar and strange easily?
Any suggestions and opinions on our training and progress is appreciated.
