Heeling - teaching the quarter turn

I have never seen or read how this is taught.

Can someone break it down for me? Particularily where you turn into the dog and it has to "scootch" backwards into position

I use the Dobbs method. Put pup on a leash in the heal position. Give the command heel and turn into the pup and backup while at the same time tapping a rattle stick right in front of the front feet.

Rattle stick = a bamboo split in to 1/4s or 1/8s at one end that will make noise.

Addendum: Oops, I progressed too fast. Break the above down into smaller increments for teaching the concept...the whole process is in the Dobbs book with pics.

I like Ivan Balabanov's tapes/DVDs Obedience Without Conflict, specially the second one called 'The Game'.
I think its suites Airedales very nicely. His heeling concept is "finding the leg". He breaks it down there step by step. Check it out.

I agree. I have been to one of Ivan's seminars and viewed his tapes many times. I use his methods to line up Madonna for her marking work as well. I do think it is necessary to view Tape 1 "Clear Communication" several times before attempting playing "The Game".
Getting that little hop in for the left turn actually sets the stage for the second left about turn that I mentioned in the left about turn thread.
Finding the leg is the essence of heeling regardless of the sport you are training in.
