It's a training exercise we started for both pups right around 3mo old. Done once a day at mealtime (you can do twice if you feed them more often)
Objective: the dog will stay without movement in front of the food bowl until the handler issues a release command to begin eating.
Goals: 1) Establish foundation for long stay commands in competition obedience. 2) Teach a deterrent verbal cue telling the dog he is on the wrong track (needed when physical correction is not desired or impossible)
Start by placing in a sit or down position while holding the food bowl. Give a praise/release cue (we use the word "EX") and give food. Next day make a 2 second pause between the command and release, continue increasing time lapse and start adding "stay" to the "sit" or "down". Once the dog waits for up to 1 min start placing the food bowl on the floor and waiting before the release (at the beginning the bowl should be closer to you than the dog) At any time the dog moves too soon you give him the deterrent cue (we use "Uh-UH") and snatch the bowl away. Repeat until successful. Add distance with time, add “owner absence”. Use verbal deterrents and in GROSS disobedience moments –take food away and leave kitchen. If you feed once a day – will have to come back in an hour and repeat, for an older dog fed at least twice a day may skip the whole meal for a “lesson learned” experience. Mucho praise, big applause every time the dog is successful.
