Can those who know about working PSA with Airedales comment on how they differ from Shepherds and bull breeds in this line of work? Strengths? Challenges? Etc. thank you.

I only know of two Airedales that have gotten titles and only saw mine and Vids of the other. Couldn't tell any difference between mine and similiarly sized dog GSD etc

Sherman, it has more to do w/the individual dog rather than breed except for the fact that it will be difficult to find a dale qualified for PSA or real man -work, in general. The dog pictured is my PSA 1 dog. smg.beta.photobucket.com/user/m_baldassarre/media/BearPSAQuakertown.jpg.html?sort=3&o=19I train many herders [mals/dutch/GSDs] as well as bull-breeds. The key is simply to get your dog out of quality proven working lines and you will improve the odds tremendously. "Luck" and training are great but you can't beat genetics. Please let me know if you know of any working dales out there. My boy is now 11! m_baldassarre@yahoo.com

my airedale is a good example of breeding. all my other airedales developed into being much more protective at a much earlier age. my current airedale has not shown much more than barking at the door a few times when someone is there. just lately he has started acting more aggressive when someone is at the door (he is almost 18 months). i am encouraging this without applying preasure, i am afraid he would fold at this time with any preasure. the ouachita dogs i had seemed to have stronger nerves and more naturaly protective, at least at an earlier age. my current dale is only starting to show at almost 18 months what my other dales showed at 6 months. i guess it's in the breeding.

Of course it is in the breeding Rick. I know 50% of your dog is bred for hunting but I tolerated no, nor bred anything, with people aggression. The other 50% I have no idea what it was bred for. Now this comes from the Working Dog Forum....not me....but the general consensus is that there is no such thing as a dog that is "naturally" protective. They believe dogs are trained to be protective. Some things, I think we can both agree on, is that, yes, some things need training to put the dog on the same page with the owner in the area of protection, but, there is no question as to the fact that there are dogs that "ARE" naturally protective. Some breeds are more naturally protective than others as a whole. Airedales are very similar in many ways to the APBT. Both being terriers, both being people dogs first and foremost, both needing a different format in training technique to bring out the best in them.

well don, i have not had as much experience with the shear number of airedales that you have, but i have owned airedales non stop since 1978. i have read where airedales are slow to mature, that has not been my experience until this one. i disagree that airedales are "not naturaly protective" all my other dales have been naturaly protective from an early age. Bo seems to be finally coming around just recently. i mispoke earlier when i stated that Bo is not aggressive. what i really meant to say is protective. i'm not looking for an aggressive dog but a protective dog that will stand his ground. he may yet become what i'm wanting. he is very smart, friendly and well balanced. he has an adaquate amount of aloofness with strangers, and has shown suspicion with questionable strangers. my training with Bo has been different, i have put alot more preasure on some of my other dales at earlier ages. with Bo i have delayed adding presure not wanting him to fold. i think just recently it has started to pay off. as for hunting ability, our neighborhood is over run with feral cats, he is on a crusade to eliminate them, he is doing his part at least eliminating some of those that invade our yard. BTW, Bo likes to watch tv. he likes animal planet, nature shows with wolves in them and the car insurance commercial with the 2 crates of golden retreiver pups. when he hears the commercial start even if he is in the other room he runs to the tv and sits and watches the commercial right in front of the tv. as for all his obedience, he does that just fine and he keeps me laughing so i think i'll keep him:)
