I have read, more times than I can count, that people feel they have to be the alpha in their relationship with their dog if they expect to have control over said dog.....yadda yadda yadda.
In regards to being an alpha.....you are or you are not. Many think they can fake it with a dog, lol, but you aren't going to fool them. The lack of alpha personalities in people to day is probably directly responsible for all this positive reward in training because it was the only way people could get the dog to comply with any "request". Looking at it like an "alpha" dog does, he sees the human as kissing his butt with treats to coax him into doing what they want. Laughs the whole time he is eating them.
Let's face it, if you coax a dog into sitting 5 times for a treat, he knows what the request is. On the 6th attempt you are out of treats and the dog checks your hand and pocket and blows you off. People can rationalize it any way they want to, but, the fact is......the dog is in control. When you know a dog knows what you are telling him and blows you off, he lacks respect for you. In an all dog situation, the alpha dog doesn't kiss everyone's butt to get compliance, he kicks butt....but only to the extent that is needed. Because of that, they respect him and quit bucking his wishes. Dogs, like people, have to respect the one giving the orders. It has always been that way and always will.
