Someone on the otterhound board has a litter of otterhound pups that were born all black and so far have stayed all black. Another person responding to the post said she knows of an otterhound that was born all black and stayed that way as an adult. All black is rare among otterhounds, but I wonder if that's where all black comes from in the also rare all black Airedales. Probably not that simple; nothing ever is, but I wonder.

Robert Somewhere I saw that normal color for OHs was B&T, it wouldn't be a far stretch if that were the case. I have seen both Spotted & Merle's in addition.

Color is still being discussed on the otterhound board:
"John Bell Irving said that the Dumfrieshire pack did destroy tris at birth. When pack masters were establishing a breed and there were no pet owners, they were rigorous in selecting what they wanted in both hunting tendencies and appearance.
"I hear there are a few [liver colored OHs] in England now, but I have been told by at least one English breeder...that they feel the color is a dilute form of red grizzle and not desireable."

The black coloure has been around since the breed has started. reaserch in our blacks pedigrees show names like "bucket of coal" and Salt and Pepper". This peigree, 47 pages of them goe back probably to the 1910 era. Could the black Airedales be desendents of this? More than likley. I have learned in the past 16 yrs of dealing with genetists, that all things, including color, come around within a ten generation spread. Whether a color is desirable or not for the standard, it should not mean a negitive point on its ablility to hunt. Our Tina was from an all black litter. Her breeder was not conserned, due to the fact her female took 18 months to lighten up. The sire and dam of this litter were housed in a brickman kennel and female was under watch after the male was through. For the last 22 yrs, I have been quietly stating the blacks are a throw-back.

Just for the record:I've never heard you state anything quietly, at least on this mb, that is unless one can consider a nest of young magpies quiet. LOL.
