Don, I've gotten two bears while hunting with Plotts. The one in Maine being the most exciting. The dogs finally treed the bear after about a four hour run.We leashed the hounds near the base of the tree and I made the shot with a handgun. The shot seemed good but he hit the ground running, not knowing how bad he was hurt we turned the dogs on him.He only went about a hundred yards and stopped in a thick berry patch and turned to face the Plotts who were right on him.The fight was on and they were in and out not staying in hold long enough for the bear to do any real damage.I managed to get within about ten feet as the dogs had his attention and killed him with another shot. One of the things I remember in all of the excitement was the owner of the Plotts(a friend of mine) yelling over and over"John don"t shoot my dogs".It was close quarters.

HI paul.Welcome to the board.Glad you found it. Wonder if you could tell us about your experience with Airedales in Schutz.? This would be of great interest to my friend Curt who claims to own,and I quote, "The Only Schutzhund Airedale, IT, in the Great Northwest and in Canada",lol. Thanks and regards Joe F

My experience with Airedales' in schH is very limited. Was in the early 1980s' & the owners never did follow through with the training . But i do remember the young dog to be biting on the solid tug , good drive for the toy. The others i worked in general obedience , & limited protection work. I have competed & titled in the schH sport with Malinois & Rottweiler. I have also titled several Malinois in Fench Ring . I'm currently working several American Bulldogs in schH & UKC/SDA , as well as a Boerboel in schH . There not many Airedales in my area , im sad to say. I have found that he ones i did work, were willing to work. Sorry i can't be of more help in this matter.

Hi Curt , yes i know Doug Deacon, showed under him when he was apprenticeing in the early 1980s' , along with Frank Mensing , & Lance Collins , schH111 championships in Quebec. That group favours the GSD , no doubt. I have a very rare breed FilaSao Miguel , started the male in schH , good tracker , good obedience , too dangerous for the protection work , too civil. He does better on the suit. The female is much better on the sleeve , but also very civil. Manged to put a BH on the male. If i can be of any assistance in your training please do not hesitate to ask . Good luck .

Hi Curt , didn't mean to sound presumptuous re: the help, just trying to be helpful . No I wasn't considering training an Airedale in the sport unless a client arrives to do so. I have my hands full with the FSM & the abundance of American Bulldogs coming in for sport training. I have also several Boerboels in for sport work as well. A bear for punishment i guess .

Thanks Mel, It is so nice to have this new computer. The old one was so slow that I hated to get on it. Love that puppy picture.

Got a question for you Mel or anyone out there. How do you get rid of the show pup under my name. My dogs are not show pups and I rather it say Schutzhund.
