OK, here's another new member. My Airedale Annie put me up to it. She's a great bird dog and newspaper retriever, especially when the paper is at the bottom of the dirch in a few feet of snow.
I joined this forum because a friend is looking for a HUNTING Airedale and all I can find around here (central OH) are show dogs, more or less. so I'm looking for a breeder of hunting Airedales that might have one or more pups for sale, either now or in the near future. Any ideas ? Thanks.

Welcome to the board. First off.....what kind of "hunting airedale"? Big difference between dogs for birdwork and fur.

Hi folks. I'm Hellbender. New....NOT. But I've been away for a while...getting lots of 'shock-therapy'. I hope to have some enjoyable conversations with others on the list!

New Airedale owner - proud "parent" of Major Taylor York, a 12-week-old 20 pound mouthful of milkteeth and a bladder wrapped in fur. Have returned to Terrier land this summer with York and his older "brother" - a Rat Terrier - after 15 wonderful years of Labradors. Hoping to teach this guy fur hunting as I learn (thinking a lot of squirrel since Ratty will do well there) coyote over in eastern Oregon.
Seriously considering breeding as well. Empty nesters, dog lovers, general outdoor folk, able to give the dogs the time they need as we breed them. Still have most of two years to decide (of course waiting till old enough to get OFA hip cert), so we are going to just plain have fun with this joker till then.
Living in Western Oregon, where the pup will have plenty of chances to show his mettle in and about the water. And mud.
No carpets in the house now....

I am new here, looking for advice and info on the Airdale breed. I am going to fully retire next spring and devote my time to my favorite 2 favorite past times, horses and dogs. I have trained both since I was knee high to a tall grasshopper. I have worked many breeds, from obedience to versatle hunting dogs. After much research I hace decided to try my hand at training an Airdale. I have never even seen an Airdale, have heard about them, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone! My name is Garet, I'm from Pennsylvania but currently I am living in east Texas. I'm a cellist and an orchestra director, and I am also a proud member of the Air National Guard. When I decided to look for a dog breed that was great for hunting, equally as great around the home, and had a solid heritage I stumbled upon the Airedale and ever since I've been completely hooked. I picked up my 'dale Watson when he was 10 weeks old, he's now just turned 5 months. He's not the biggest by far, as he just turned 5 months and is 40 lbs, but he's got that terrier fire in him. Your website has been extremely helpful to me both before getting Watson and since. He's a handful at times, but boy oh boy he's one smart son of a gun! Watson had a rough start, he and his brother Sherlock were sold to girls who were in college full time and thought they could just hide the pups in their dorm room closet. Of course, that lasted for all of three weeks before they were caught, their father found out, and forced the girls to take them to the local rescue. After meeting the two boys, I decided on Watson because he did a fantastic job of ending every fight his brother started, but other than that was constantly chasing down and bringing sticks and toys straight up to me! He began basic obedience training with me at 10 weeks (when I got him) and has been doing a great job. From what I read you all say, this is normal for an Airedale, but as a guy who always had spaniels, he's really blown me out of the water with how quickly he learns things and how well they "stick". We have started basic retrieval, and he really seems to like "pointing" (gets as stiff as a rod but doesn't lift his paw) at a toy when he finds it and waits for me to say "Get it" to pounce. I am developing this into a "Whoa" "Get it" and "Come" that seems to be working really well. My goal is not to develop a championship dog, just to develop a dog that does everything I need him to do, which for me is help put pheasants on the dinner table! Anywhoo, I'm very greatful for this board and all of the intelligence and experience you all bring to the table with this breed! Any advice along the way on getting them solid pheasant hunters will be greatly apreciated. We go home to PA in a month, hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures of Watson in the snow pushing up a pheasant or two!

Welcome Hartwig and Watson. I just got home so this will,be short. There are a lot of people here with bird experience..... I am not one of them, but they will respond. As for basic training..... just ask because there are plenty here that have trained them......and they do have a few characteristi9cs that is good to be aware of.....like repetitiveness.

Chad here, checking in from Georgia en route to my new assignment in California. I have a 2.5 yo male from Randy Nelson in Alabama that I couldn't be happier with. Just got back from a year away from him while I was stationed in Korea so he has been running wild in a 40' by 20' fenced in area at my friends house for the last several months and will need a little bit of retraining but I plan on using him to decoy coyotes and hunt small game once I get out west. Would love to meet some other Airedale owners once I get out there.
Thanks Chad
