I'm Justin from Middle TN, and I have a 8 month old Airedale named Rosco. We finished the CGC class Sunday and I'm looking for what's next. I hunted rabbits and squirrels in school but with a couple of older men from church with their beagles. I'd love to learn how to train my dog to hunt them. I've also been wandering about dove and duck hunting but have never been. I'm pretty much interested in making him the all around hunting dog the breed is known for. Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated. P.S. Glad I found this site.

rabbits and squirrels dove and duck hunting Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated. Welcome Justin. Congrats on the new pup. My Airedale helps me with all these jobs except Dove. For some reason Michigan says they are song birds. Fur and feather are different pursuits. If I were you I'd pick the one you'll want to do the most and train that first. My dog was trained to bird hunt first, grouse here in Michigan. The only problem I have with him duck hunting is he gets a little bored waiting for the action. With rabbits and squirrels he doesn't range out far, because he was trained not to for bird hunting. He still does a good job checking brush and jumping bunnies. But I don't expect him to or want him to run a couple hundred yard circle because that is not his primary mission. Also, be careful hunting him with hounds. He is faster and was bred to be silent. If a guy is used to hunting behind a beagle they might take shot at a rabbit and not realize a 70 pound Airedale has closed the distance in a fraction of a second. Frank

For Doves Airedale is a retriever of downed birds. Where I live shooting is fast and furious around Sun flower stands...Doves are real aerial acrobats and it's a quick stand up from the bucket you been sitting on and shoot...dog needs good stay command till released....also watch out for your dog there are a lot of jerks out there! good luck and happy hunting....upland flushing hits more to the Airedales natural ability.

Howdy from South Dakota, I hunt with jagd terriers and used to run hounds. Don't own an airedale but have been interested in the breed. Jagds work good for getting ahold of yotes in thick cover but when the yote gets loose jagds don't stand much of a chance. I have got them to leave a yote alone on open ground. Just thinking an airedale might fit the bill. Have a good one. Jesse Attachments:

Hi, we just got our first airedale puppy. He is 9 weeks old. He is already a character. Any tips for us on training would be greatly appreciated! We are crate training him, or at least trying. He is a real cry baby right now and just wants to be with us all the time. He has his first vet visit this Friday. (with us being his owners) We are totally in love with him already!

Hello, all ADT folk! this is post #1. I've been working with Airedales since I was 15 in 1975-oops, now I've gone and dated myself. I use the kennel name Seneca Airedales, you can google it and see what we're about. I sometimes run a search on my dogs and keep seeing posts that mention them here on this board, some of which seem to wonder if I'm still around! So, I thought I'd join. There. What's happening right now for me? We just had a fan-tabulous litter born May 23. Great aptitude scores from a blend of my 9 generations and a linebred doubled German side of the Jalomonis kennel. I kept a boy and all the other proud new puppy owners are planning to do more than couch sit too. We'll see how it goes as they get bigger. Fancy.pdf (60.92 KB) I study the major AM bloodlines esp from the 70-80's and before, and many of the German lines. I'm good at glueing ears, stripping out coats, training AKC style, and raising puppies that can do anything! No puppies now for a little while though. If anyone has questions about something, I can be a resource. Hopefully, you can help me when I have a question too. Best wishes out in the field, training floor, or ring!

After nine years of reading this board, thought perhaps it time register... I live with my dearest showbred bitch, Blackheath Viola age 9 and my beloved dog High Country Julius Orange age 5. Julius is Palin's litter mate. My dogs have the difficult job of living with me in Napa Valley. And they do a very good job of putting up with me.
Merry Christmas all, Meena
